Interaction Design Intern

Designworks

During Spring 2020, I worked on the Interaction Design team as an Interaction Design Intern at Designworks, A BMW Group Company. Although I worked remotely for half of my internship due to COVID, I still collaborated seamlessly with my project manager and fellow designers throughout the design process to deliver the prototype to our clients.

As my work is under strict NDA, unfortunately, I’m not able to share my work.

01 TAKEAWAYS AS A DESIGNWORKER

I'd like to tell you a little about me before we get to that. As I was heading into my last year at RIT, I knew how crucial the year was going to be especially for international students who are eager to work in the US after graduation. I was so glad that I had an opportunity to intern at a US firm before I graduate.

Although I can't disclose the details of my spring internship at Designworks, I can talk about my experiences, learnings, and what I was able to achieve while I was there. The following are my takeaways.

- Able to communicate and present my ideas precisely

Presenting does not come naturally to me, so I was nervous every time when presenting my work in front of people. But I learned the importance of being able to communicate ideas precisely and I kept pushing myself to talk more and I am still learning to be a better presenter and communicator.

- My strengths and weakness to become as a designer
At the end of the internship, I reflected about my time at Designworks. I concluded what I have improved and what I have to work more on. I had significantly improved on my visual design skills and design thinking. I also learned that my biggest area for growth is communication and was able to meet with many of Designwork's project managers to present my work and get feedback.

02 FEEDBACK FROM MY TEAM 👀

Ming-Hui has been very reliable and has had a strong work ethic. She always worked reliably, autonomously, and conscientiously. When we were in the office, she was always very outgoing and eager to participate in activities with the team.

When we began remote work due to the pandemic, she easily handled the transition and remained in constant communication with the rest of the team.

We had such a short time to work together in person, but I very much enjoyed the chance to meet you and the sense of team spirit you brought.

Thank you, on behalf of Designworks, for bringing your energy, your skills and your willingness to take on all sorts of projects while you were here.

I lost the original copy of the message :-(

But I remembered Charles told me I was a person who was easy to work with and my energetic vibe matches the spirit of the Designworks, which is the main reason he loved to work there.

03 FINAL THOUGHT

I truly believe the 6 months that I spent at Designworks helped me grow not only as a designer but as an individual as I overcame many personal and professional obstacles. This pivotal experience in my design career is something that assures me that I am on the right track and making something great for the world.
