Redesign Personal Training System

Fitguru

Fitguru is a personal fitness system redesigned to help people maintain their workout habit and workout frequently. After conducting gym observations and interviews, I found out that people lack motivation going to the gym regularly. So, I built an application to remind them that it's time to hit the gym.

1️⃣ Frustration: Current Tool of Receiving Exercise Task

People become discouraged after going to the gym a few times. Why are they discouraged? The existing system is inefficient and time-consuming. A personal trainer designs a workout plan and makes custom PDFs which link to YouTube Videos and sends them to a trainee weekly so he/she can follow instructions by opening the PDFs on phone. There will be no feedback provided so the trainee will not know where or what he/she did wrong or did well, which leads to lack of motivation to carry on and form a habit. I list it out some of the problems that we can make change:

  1. Lack of Clarity

The process of reading PDF and opening video is too difficult for users to do on the cell phone. They need to switch one screen to another. It is not user friendly when people working out.

  2. No Feedback Mechinism

Feedback is important for beginners, but there is no ways of communication with coaches.

  3. Lacking of Motivation

People are lacking energy, not to mention creating a new habit of exercising frequently.

2️⃣ Design Iteration

Going back to observations and task analysis, I decided to create an app. For the overall design, the interface should be clear, straightforward and user friendly for user to explore while working out. The main functions of this app needs to be:

  1. Simple, Clear and Convience

Streamline access for users which allows them to access daily tasks and follow instructions easily.

  2. Feedback Mechanism

Metrics charts help users keep tracking of their workout effect.

  3. Reminder

Create a reminder to remind users to work out routinely.

3️⃣ Design Implementation

01
Onboarding: Personal Diagnosis

After logging on to the account, the system will ask users to fill up a 3-page questionnaire. The first page is about physical information including name, age, height and weight. The second page is about exercising frequency. The third page is about what the goal is. By filling out this questionnaire, the system can provide customized daily workout routines for them to follow. This solution is all about providing users with appropriate routines so that they won't feel pressured to finish workout and give up soon after.

A Companion Solution

It may be inconvenient for some users to use the phone while working out, so the watch version may be a good fit. For them, watches are more accessible than phones, so notifications tailored to watches may be more useful. After the system pushes a notification, users can schedule gym day immediately after.  Aside from calendar and notifications, users can also navigate to the control screen and they can adjust the volume, pause, or continue training and go to the previous or next form. Users can also view the remaining time of the training on the main screen. They are able to continue working out without bringing their phone.
